
Navy ships made locally: HII makes quick transition at former W International site
BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The 45-acre complex off Bushy Park Road just north of the Naval Weapons Station used to be home to W International - a large-scale metal fabricator.
In December, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced their acquisition of the facility - and with that, their Newport News Shipbuilding division was able to carry over nearly all of some 500 employees.
Fast forward to mid-March, and the country's largest military shipbuilder is already making use of the four buildings and almost 500-thousand square feet of space in Berkeley County.
