Shown here is an ancient mesoamerican ceremony called the Danza de los voladores, also know as palo volador or the “dance of the flyers. This ceremony is believed to have started in central Mexico and is still performed to this day. During the ritual participants dance and climb a 30m pole, then decend from the top by ropes usually starched to there feet. The 5th person remains on top, playing a flute and the drums while dancing. It is believed this ritual was conducted as a message to the gods to end the severe droughts that occurred around that time. 😱
